India is not a country. It’s a continent with states that have populations that outnumber those of many European nations.

And if we talk about diversity, again it’s an amalgamation of various cultures and traditions.

Yet, we have unity in diversity.

When you ask about a particular product that represents my country’s tradition, I can say, without any doubts, it is the Khadi cloth.

Khadi – the name is derived from word Khaddar which means a coarse cloth.

It is handspun and hand-woven natural fiber cloth which was popularized by Mahatma Gandhi.

For him, and for many other freedom fighters, Khadi was symbol of self-respect and self sufficiency.

To boost our village economy, Gandhiji encouraged countrymen to adopt and endorse Khadi clothes.

And this environment friendly cloth is a versatile fabric. It remains warm in winter and cool in summer. So, it is the best material for the tropical climate of India.

The problem with us Indians is that we don’t know the true value of our traditional products.

Then, someone from the West comes along and endorses an Indian product and we Indians start getting mad over that.

So last year, when in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, the US president Joe Biden spoke about the importance of wearing Khadi clothes, the entire Indian nation was woken up from its neglectful slumber

We started visiting shops where Khadi cloth was being sold. My friend Peter is a huge fan of Joe Biden.

He also became a proponent of Khadi cloth after that speech.

He searched for a good Khadi shop on the internet, and found that the nearest shop was at Gujarat Vidyapith, a university founded by Mahatma Gandhi.

He took me there and we bought some shirts and kurtas for ourselves.

There are different varieties of Khadi cloth. It is mainly made of cotton fiber. But, it may also include silk or wool that is spun into yarn on a spinning wheel called Charakha

Today, when I wear any Khadi shirt or Kurta, it makes me stand out in a crowd. This smooth cloth is body friendly fabric, and that prevents allergies or irritations to the skin.

I heartily thank Gandhiji, and Mr. Joe Biden too, for letting us feel the magic of a Khadi cloth.

Part 3

Why are traditional products important?

In my opinion, these products help boost the economy of the nation.

These products also help the local artisans and craftsmen to survive the onslaught of giant multinationals.

And these products are made from natural resources and can be easily recycled, so they are environment friendly too.

Do you think tradition is important for a country? Why?

Tradition is a synonym for the identity.

So without tradition, a country loses its identity.

Today, developing countries like India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, etc. have their traditional products.

And tourists buy these products as souvenirs whenever they visit these countries.

So, these products collectively are a tool that promotes indigenous culture

What are the traditional Indian products?

There are innumerable products that fall under the title of ‘Traditional Indian Products’.

Each region, be it Gujarat or Guwahati, Assam or Andhra Pradesh, has its own traditional products.

I am from Gujarat, so I can proudly say that my state is famous for Gujarati sweets, Khadi cloth, and wooden toys that are made by craftsmen living in the hilly areas of my state.

And if I talk about other states, sweets made by Bengali people are perhaps the most famous things not just in India, but also in the world.

Why is it important for children to learn about traditional products?

Traditional products, more often than not, have a curious history of their development.

And this history is often aligned with the national history.

For instance, Indian freedom struggle and the Khadi movement are two different events superficially. But, they have many things in common, and some historians consider Khadi movement a part of Indian freedom movement.

So a child can learn many things about nation’s history through learning about a traditional product. And when that child grows up, he becomes a citizen who takes pride in his countries traditions and traditional products.
